If proof were needed that the weather isn’t going to put us off, 22 people had booked for our ‘train’ walk - and 24 turned up and set off in the light rain. And the rain continued (lightly) as we left the train at Thuxton to start our return walk. Happily, this eased and faded away before too long - we even got some sunshine as we walked up the road from Thuxton and across the fields to Tanners Green.
Sad to report, the cross field paths from here had just a few days earlier been covered by crops, with no path made through. The crop had been harvested (we checked the day before), but leaving 6-9 inch stubble which, with no path delineated, would have been awkward and potentially injurious, so we were forced to go round on the lanes instead. Similarly, the path across the fields at Brakefield Green was overgrown, so yet more lane walking was needed. Happily, traffic was infrequent. Both of these issues had been reported to Norfolk County Council, but it had said it did not have the time or resource to resolve them before our walk.
We left Stone Road along Mouse’s Lane to reach Clint Green and a short pause for refreshment, before continuing across the road and on to Cutthroat Lane (which it has recently been suggested is not named after some bloodthirsty event, but is a corruption of ‘cut through’ road, as it links Yaxham to Clint Green via a quiet back route). From here it was across Mouse’s Bridge (lots of mice in this area!) and on to the Dumpling Green track. For the final mile, we crossed the A47 to Greens Road, along Greenfields Road and Norwich Road and so back to the Railway Station - where tea/coffee and cake (and lunch for some) awaited all but a couple of us. Thanks to Mid-Norfolk Railway for the train and the food and drink.
