New Year's Day walk

The unpromising weather notwithstanding, a smaller than usual 'intrepid' group met for our traditional New Year’s Day walk.

As we set out down Washbridge, we congratulated ourselves on not being put off by the threat of rain, but all too soon afterwards, the heavens opened and gave us a thorough soaking.

Wet walkers

Happily, this didn’t last too long and the rest of the walk was conducted in lighter rain which ceased entirely just before completing the walk. The predicted high wind had already subsided and caused virtually no impediment. We did avoid Rushmeadow, as a check the previous day had revealed a couple of very boggy sections by the river, which could only have become worse following even light rainfall. So we stuck to the top path to the west of Humbletoft, then climbed up to Sandy Lane. A bit of road walking took us to the still relatively new Jubilee Trail. At this point we could have cut the walk short but as the rain was easing (a bit) everyone was content to continue.

We followed to join the Wensum Way north of Dereham and across to the Mid-Norfolk Railway line. Then it was south past Hoe Lodge and back to town, where our much anticipated refreshments awaited.
